Mission Statement Cont ....

Technology-Enhanced Learning

The University makes extensive and innovative use of technology in the development and delivery of credit bearing courses and programs to its students in order to:

  • Significantly enhance learning outcomes
  • Develop students' technology skills
  • Provide courses/programs that contribute substantially to workforce development
  • Provide an alternative to commuting
  • Deliver programming to and from the University's Northern Virginia campuses

Distance Learning Programs

Distance learning programs will generally be developed from programs that are offered to the Northern Virginia community. If program content is offered in Northern Virginia, then the program may also be developed for distance learning delivery. In exceptional cases where content is especially relevant to a distance learning community, new courses can be developed for that community as appropriate.

Before a distance program is implemented, a business plan must be written and submitted for approval to the Dean or Director of the relevant academic unit. The business plan should include a financial analysis (including direct and indirect costs), plans for assessment of learning outcomes, a statement of how the program will meet the SACS criteria for distance learning programs, and identify possible partners, if any, for delivery and assessment.

If the Dean or Director approves the program, the business plan should be forwarded to the Provost's Office for review by that office, the Vice President of Information Technology and the Budget Office, with respect to costing out of central services, revenue estimates and procedures for admitting and registering students, and providing them with appropriate services.
